Yours Truly, with the US Census

General News

$17 an hour, 40 hours a week. $680 a week. The Census is expected to have a heavier workload than usual this year, so it'll be working all summer. Three or four months of this? Nice.

I'll be going door-to-door and asking questions to those who did not send in the Census mail on April 1st.

Against the Giants: Session Two, Part Three

Dungeons&DragonsTruly the Hill Giant fort was not particularly tough. We had enough clerics and fighters to take the hits, and a 9th level wizard that could take down large groups. My own spell list at the time was fairly limited, Phantasmal Forces being my main spell. I could combine it with Audible Glamour, but that proved to be a tricky combination.

I guess it would have been harder if we did not have the Rod of Security. Alas for Burl's Giants.

Against the Giants: Session Two, Part Two

Dungeons&DragonsWell, now, here we are again.

June, 2009

Giants have long been a mighty foe in human mythology, particularly of northern Europe. Surtr, of the Norse wielded a flaming sword to cleae the world in twain at Ragnarök. He was king of the Jotunns, the Norse Giants, and though he was depicted as swarthy and wielding flame, most giants were seen as smaller, and more associated with the cold and arctic. English giants such as Jack and the Beanstock have long permeated the British Isles, even to the Irish, Welsh, and Scots. Finn Maccooul was one such giant of Ireland. The Fomorians were an ancient race of Irish giants that populated the island before Man came.

See, this is the kind of thing that I would love to do as an archeology student.

There is only so much that can be gleaned from theory and research. sometimes you have to go out and experiment on what you are studying, and the gladiators of ancient Rome are as good an idea as any.

Ranch Work

The Bard's TaleIt's been a busy week, here at the ranch.

Up at 6 am, usually having a light snack whilst getting dressed. Out the door and in the razor by around 6:50. We do the 'rounds' in a single pasture, counting 52 cows and their calfs. If any are in unusual spots or not with the main herd, we count them again and look for the missing cows. They usually have a new-born calf with them.

The average is 1 or two a day, though last week we had none for four days and then five in friday. This morning there were five births. Four from last night, and one pre-mature birth. The premature supposedly happened becuase the mother ate some pine needles, which causes the animal to go into labor prematurely. The calf must've only weighed about thirty pounds, most are abnout eighty.
