Change of Plans

General NewsWell, because I did not book far enough in advance tomorrow evening is going to find me without a bed until Saturday, when the glut of actors that are coming through town leave.

I thinking about making a sort of pilgrimage to the Austerlitz battlefield... its a good deal south and west of where I am, but I have plenty of food and time.

Last time I went from town to town by food I made 30 kilometers in five hours... I figure It will take me at most a day and a half of walking.

We shall see.

Olomouc Update

General NewsI have heard from others that Olomouc can be best described as a mini Prague, but without the tourists.

A feeling I have never felt before...

Rambling ThoughtsIt has been a day since Prague, and some time since the incident of which I am writing about here.

Since that time I've attempted to put what i've been feeling into words. At poetry I've failed miserably, but perhaps a short essay, and a song from The Beatles, will clarify things.

In Prague

The Bard's TaleSo... Here I am, out of the Germanies.

I"ll be staying in Prague for several days.... get to see some of the nightlife, as well as important historical landmarks. I"m staying at a fairly nice hostel named Sir Toby"s; there"s plenty of restaurants and some small grocery stores nearby; there is also a bar in the basement, very nice brickwork.

I"m a little relieved that I won"t be using Euros anymore. My purse strings are a little more fre now, but even so I think I will have to tighten them again. I went on a small splurge in Fussen with going out to restaurants with some of the other people from the hostel, and restaurants are expensive.

Unfortunaetly new picts won"t be uploaded, the computer I"m using here doesn't have a usb port available.

2009 BWCA Trip Intro

The Bard's TaleOn my family's forum I promised to finish this, but seeing as I'm spending more time here I'd thought I should post it here as well.

For those that don't know, I come from Minnesota. Though in the southern part, especially around the Missisippi river, there is substantial population density, as you get further north it turns to many lakes and forests, and decreasing population; the last major population center in the north is Duluth, and after that it turns to what we call "The Sticks"... trees, trees, and more trees.

The Canadian borde is fairly popular with hikers, campers, and canoers because so little of it is claimed in terms of construction, by either Canada or the US.

As a last Father-Son bonding experiance, I and my Father traveled up north with the truck and canoe, and prepared for about a week out in the wilderness.

Where To...?

Rambling ThoughtsIs something that I often have asked myself in this trip.

As of now I am in Füssen; the dorm that I have booked is only available until the 22nd.

I'm thinking I'll go take another look at Ludwig's castles, or at least the parts that I can see without museum tickets, during my stay here.

Weather forecast says it should be fairly foggy during my stay here in southern Germany; Rick Steven's "Europe through the back door" suggests a number of castles and ruins in the area, and I think that until I take the train to Prague that is what I will be doing.

So, probably these updates today will be the last for a week or so. We'll see.

On Austria

The Bard's Tale"Austria" in German is translated as "Österreich"

As with all names, there is a literal and figurative translation of this; while when refering to Austria you would say Österreich, it is also an adjective, taken literally it means "Eastern Empire".

German is a fairly old language, unlike English. Many of it's words and phrases come from the medieval period, when there was no Germany but merely an overweight and bloated "Holy Roman Empire" that was created under Charlemagne.

On the great emperor's death his empire was split among his sons, as was the custom: Most of the modern day territory of France and parts of the low countries were given as the westernmost part of the empire, and were given the name "frankreich", which is still used today to denote France.

The other parts of the empire were divided into a large portion of Germany and Italy, and a third border state that wound itself like a snake between the two. The eastern part of the empire expanded into Austria, which became the furthest part of the empire ever acheived, hence the name.

New Plans

General NewsUgh...

Things have been a little rushed over the past few days.
